Future Lithuanette

Japanese-Lithuanian graffiti mural welcoming Vilnius city guests.
2022

The mural faces the main road from Vilnius Airport to the city center, greeting the majority of the airport’s 4 million annual passengers.

Its placement makes it one of the most viewed pieces of art in Lithuania.

Created by Japanese illustrator Hiroyuki Mitsume Takahashi and brought to life by graffiti artist Kipras Petrulis, the piece transforms a building façade with a striking portrayal of a modern Lithuanian woman, seamlessly blending traditional cultural elements with futuristic style.

The artistic collaboration of Mitsume’s signature illustration style and Petrulis’ authentic brushstroke makes it the first visual arts collaboration of Japan and Lithuania.
Mitsume collaborated closely with the Lithuanian National Culture Center to incorporate over 40 Lithuanian ethnographic, traditional, cultural, and societal elements into the illustration. These range from basketball—often referred to as Lithuania's "second religion"—to the third hand, symbolizing the holiness of St. Casimir, the patron saint of Vilnius. Other details include a coat of arms reimagined as an eye patch, amber encapsulating a mosquito, and the iconic iron wolf howling—a timeless emblem of Vilnius. Each element weaves a rich narrative, making the artwork not only a visual centerpiece but also a meaningful conversation starter that celebrates the essence of Lithuanian identity.

Initiative supported by Viva Color, Vilnius City Municipality and Vilnius City Council member Vincas Jurgutis.

Made in partnership with ‘Oh! Musubi’ agency.

Painted on a 20-meter-tall, five-story residential building in a low-income neighborhood, the artwork has struck a chord with the local community, igniting both pride and curiosity. For many residents, it stands as more than just a mural—it is a beacon of transformation, illustrating how creativity can challenge stereotypes and inspire a renewed sense of identity. Once overlooked, the neighborhood now draws attention, with the artwork acting as a bridge between its past and a more optimistic vision for the future.

The mural has garnered significant attention in Lithuanian national media. Leading news outlets such as Delfi, 15min, and Žmonės have featured articles highlighting the artwork's creation, cultural significance, and impact on the community.
