Creative リトアニア

Celebration of Lithuanian creativity in Tokyo. Since 2017. creativelithuania.jp

Held annually in Tokyo, project has two goals:
- Encourage ties of Lithuanian and Japanese culture producers through conference and meetings.
- Present Lithuanian contemporary art and design, and performing arts collaborations.

Creative リトアニア is an annual celebration of Lithuanian creativity in Tokyo, Japan, showcasing the richness and diversity of its cultural landscape. Since its launch in 2017, the project has focused on three interconnected goals: presenting innovative Lithuanian design and art, highlighting performing arts and music through international collaborations, and fostering creative business ties through industry conferences, networking events, and the vibrant Pink Soup Party.

The project was born from the recognition that while Japanese audiences admire Lithuania, their perception often leans toward traditional elements like linen, amber, and folk art. Creative リトアニア seeks to expand this view, revealing a dynamic and evolving creative scene that reflects Lithuania’s contemporary identity.

One of main parts is exhibitions of Lithuanian contemporary art and design, new media art. Including such renown Lithuanian artists as: artist and researcher Julijonas Urbonas, contemporary artist Tadao Cern, installation artist Jolita Vaitkutė, film director Andrius Lekavičius, Ramūnas Minkevičius, film director Ged Sia, artist Julija Skudutyte. Works of filmmaker Jonas Mekas and fluxus father George Mačiūnas were also exhibited.

An annual conference serves as a platform to present novel creative ideas from Lithuania and explore potential avenues for collaboration. It’s a platform where leading figures from Lithuania’s creative industries—designers, artists, technologists, and cultural managers—join Japanese counterparts to discuss emerging trends, share success stories, and lay the groundwork for future partnerships.

While the conference itself follows a familiar format, its highlight is the renowned Pink Soup Party. This lively gathering fosters deeper connections and shared ideas, featuring Lithuania’s iconic cold beetroot soup alongside an array of traditional snacks and refreshments, creating a memorable blend of creativity and hospitality.

Creative Lithuania comissions and hosts music and performing arts collaborations of Lithuanian and Japanese artists, including Boylston Jazz, Gintaras Sodeika and Tomo Yamaguchi, Kosmos Theatre and aus, Metroscan and others.

Here’s an example of pandemic-proof online live Fluxus performance of Gintaras Sodeika and Tomo Yamaguchi.

At the core of this project of the  is a close-knit community united by a shared passion to connect Japanese and Lithuanian cultures.

Partnering with: Arts Council Tokyo, Lithuanian Council for Culture, EU-Japan Fest, Embassy of Lithuania in Japan,  NOSIGNER, EU Delegation to Japan, Japan-Lithuania Friendship Association, DesignArt and many more.
